Vincent and Theo: The Van Gogh Brothers- Book Review

Image
I really enjoyed reading Vincent and Theo: The Van Gogh Brothers written   by Deborah Heiligman. It was very interesting and easy to understand and read. This book is about the life of Vincent and Theo Van Gogh. Theo supported Vincent most of his adult life. Vincent would not have become the painter we now know without Theo. Although their stories had a tragic ending, it was so fascinating to read about them. This is a YA book, but it is good for all. I definitely would recommend this to someone who loves art. Here are some things I liked (+) and disliked (-) about this book: +Very interesting + The author's formant and use of pictures was original and so lovely + I learned a lot - I sometimes got mixed up with the different characters, but I think that this was mostly my fault - Sad ending - A bit long (409 pages) Overall rating:**** (4/5 stars)

Animal Farm- Book Review

Image
I read Animal Farm by George Orwell. I thought it was interesting. It is not really long, but it has a really interesting message about government and society. It is interesting how we can eventually turn into our enemies if we are not watching ourselves. The animals on Manor Farm are tired of being controlled by humans. They overthrow the humans and create Animal Farm. At first, they live in peace, but many things change as power gets to the pigs heads. Here is what I liked (+) and disliked (-) about this book: + It is short. + It is fairly entertaining. + I feel like you learn something when you read it. At least, I did. - A bit odd. Not that that is bad, but I was a bit hard to... grasp at times. - I got confused with the names sometimes. Overall rating: *** (3/5 stars)

This Song Will Save Your Life - Book Review

Image
I found this book while browsing at the library. It is was a fun and easy read. A good one to take my mind off of life for a bit. Elise Dembowski has never fit in. At school, she is constantly bullied and tries hard to remain invisible. One night, while taking a midnight walk, she stumbles upon a night club. As time goes on, she realizes that she has a talent and passion for being a DJ. Here are some things I liked (+) and disliked (-) about this book:  + I loved reading about someone who has a passion for music!  + This story is fairly original.  + They mentioned a lot of great songs.  -   I feel that there was not enough description about the town she lived and the characters themselves. I feel like I didn't know the characters as well as I should. Overall rating: *** (3/5 stars)

To Kill A Mockingbird- Book Review

Image
I actually read To Kill A Mockingbird  by Harper Lee about a month ago, but I writing about it now. This book is very good. I recommend that everyone should read it. This book is about Jean Louise Finch (or Scout). Her father, Atticus, is an attorney who must defend a black man who has been unjustly accused of a great crime, in a highly prejudice town in Alabama. This story is seen through the eyes of Scout, who is mocked for having a father who is willing to defend a black man. This book is so powerful and thought-provoking. It teaches us about racism and how hatred can hurt you and others.  Here are some things that I liked (+) and disliked (-) about this book:   + The characters feel real.   + The plot is interesting.   + I really liked reading about the playfulness of children in the late 1920s/early 1930s.    I don't think I have anything bad to say about this book. Overall rating: ***** (5/5 stars)

Lord of the Flies- Book Review

Image
Surprise! I read another book. I just finished Lord of the Flies  by William Golding. This book is awesome and kind of crazy. I reminds me of the TV series Lost , but 5x crazier and no adults. I am serious though. People crash on an island, they think there is a beast, they hunt pigs, there is a fat guy, there is a guy named Jack, and there is a person that parachutes to the island. I am trying not to spoil everything. If I do, I am truly sorry. A plane full of  English school boys crashes on a remote island. The boys, trying to survive, call Ralph as their chief. But, Ralph and another boy, Jack, have disagreements which lead to loss and destruction.  Here is what I liked (+) and disliked (-) about this book: + It is not too long; only 184 pages long. + It was exciting.  + The characters were very good. I hated Jack and felt bad for Piggy. + The pace was good. - It was sad. Overall rating ***** (5/5 stars) I personally thi...

Books

You may have noticed that I have done a few book reviews. I hope you don't mind. I really love to read. I think that reading is almost magical. Does that sound cheesy? I hope not. If it does, at least I sort of get my point across..... I like reading, okay. Anytime people ask me what I enjoy doing, I usually say reading. Sometimes people give a sad smile and slowly say "Oohhh...." and you know they don't really now how to respond to that. Not everyone, though. Some people also share the same interest of reading a good book. The worst is when people ask me what I want to do. They ask what I am going to do with my life and I say I want to be a librarian. A few people have said "Oh, that's nice....". Now, I don't want to sound judgmental, but it is a bit annoying. I mean the library is the best place. It is warm in the winter, cold in the summer, it has nice old (and young) ladies (and men), and no one bothers you. That could, however, just be me. ...

Of Mice and Men- Book Review

I have finished another book. I was going to put a picture of the book, but you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, so I decided against it. This time I read a classic, Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck. I really enjoyed this one. This is a short story about two men, George Milton and Lennie Small. They travel and work together. Lennie is kind of simple minded, so George really has to look out for him. Lennie does some bad things (unintentionally) and George has to fix what has happened. This book is, in my opinion, sad. It is also intriguing and different. Here is what I liked (+) and disliked (-) about this book: + This is a short read. It has only 103 pages. + It is fairly easy to understand. + It is a good story. - There is some bad language, but this (for me) really defined who the characters where. - There are a few terms that we don't use as much today that I had to look up. Overall rating 5/5. This is a classic that everyone should read.

Turtles All the Way Down- Book Review

I just finished the book "Turtles All the Way Down" by John Green. It is good.  Aza Holmes is a 16 year old girl who suffers from a mental problem. She is controlled by her thoughts. At the same time she and her best friend, Daisy want to find the missing billionaire, Russell Pickett. Here are a few things I like (+) and don't like (-) about this book. + It is written very well. I love the way John Green writes. It is almost philosophical. + It has emotion. It feels real. You can almost feel what Aza is going through. + It is a good story. Aza and Daisy are trying to help Davis Pickett (the billionaire's son) find his dad. - There is some bad language. Overall a good story. I defiantly recommend reading it.
